Longtime Southern Oregon University coach Gail Patton has announced that she is retiring as Head Women’s Tennis Coach at the University.

Patton has coached tennis at SOU for the last 10 years and has coached overall at SOU for 15 years.

“This was a hard decision,” said Patton, who will continue teaching tennis in the Rogue Valley. “Coaching is in my blood. I put my heart and soul into coaching, not just here, but every place I’ve coached.”

The Southern Oregon University volleyball team opens up 2008 ranked 12th in the today’s NAIA Preseason Top 25 poll.

The Raiders return two All-Americans (senior Mia Wortel and junior Lindsey Stone) from last year’s 26-6 team that finished the year ranked 10th, but also are without five graduated seniors.

Fresno Pacific, a team SOU hosts Friday and Saturday at McNeal Pavilion as part of the Raider Classic, is ranked No. 1 after winning the National Championship last year.

The Southern Oregon University women’s soccer team will launch its 2008 campaign on Saturday when they host Dominican University at 2 p.m. in Ashland.

Led by third-year head coach Jon Clement, the Raiders boast a roster that features seven returners, 13 freshmen and not a single person with more than a year of college playing experience.

Clement, whose Raiders missed out on a Cascade Conference playoff spot by a game last year and finished ninth with a 3-5-1 loop record, have been picked to finish third this year by the league’s coaches despite their youth.

The Southern Oregon University volleyball team will bring some of the best volleyball in the Nation to McNeal Pavilion Friday and Saturday when they host the first-ever Raider Classic.

Fresno Pacific, Oregon Tech and Simpson University will join the host Raiders for the two-day event.

The Southern Oregon University cross country teams have been picked to finish third and ninth according to the Cascade Conference Preseason Coaches poll.

The SOU men are tabbed to finished third and the women ninth.

The Southern Oregon University football team will show off all of its preseason work Tuesday afternoon with a final scrimmage before they prepare for the season opener.

The scrimmage is set for 4 p.m. at Raider Stadium.

The Raiders opened camp on Aug. 5 and Tuesday's scrimmage will allow third-year head coach Steve Helminiak and his staff a final look at the troops as they get ready for the regular season.

The Southern Oregon University volleyball team has been picked to finish second in the Cascade Conference according to the conference’s preseason poll.

The league’s coaches voted College of Idaho to win the conference, followed by the Raiders and Oregon Tech. C of I received seven first place votes, while the Raiders received three and the Owls scored one first place vote. Overall, the Coyotes finished with 116 points in the poll and the Raiders received 111.

The Southern Oregon University women’s soccer team has been picked to finish third in the Cascade Conference in a voting done by the league’s 11 head coaches.

The Raiders, who finished ninth in the standings last year, took a huge leap to finish behind Concordia and Corban in the Preseason Poll.

Concordia won the conference title last year and Corban finished second.

The Southern Oregon University women’s soccer team opened up the 2008 season with its first practices Saturday at University Field in Ashland.

The Raiders have 21 players on its roster, including 13 freshman and just one senior and one junior.

SOU went 7-8-3 last year and just missed out on the playoffs.

Southern Oregon University Athletic Director Dennis Francois announced today that Brent Ericksen has been named the new Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach.

Ericksen comes to SOU after serving as Associate Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at NCAA Division I Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to work with a program like the one at SOU,” Ericksen said. “It has great facilities and is in a wonderful location. I really look forward to being there.”
